In the earliest days of instructional design, we identified the most common learning style among an entire audience, and then designed for the average. But that research turned out to be deeply flawed.
Now we know more about how the human brain is wired: to seek out the chemical zing of reward through discovering new information. And big data is showing us where exactly people are finding that zing. Now we can optimize instructional design for each individual.
